Yoga Classes and Five More Things to Do for Free in GR

I’ve been doing yoga alone at home via Youtube for years. Once I spent money and went to a class in person and felt judged by everyone there, I realized that I’d better be wobbling and falling at home by myself. But yesterday I took the plunge and attended a free yoga class hosted by the City of Grand Rapids, and I think maybe I’ve finally found something that works great for me.

So if you’re like me and have always been curious about what classes are available but weren’t brave enough to take the plunge, here are some great options for yoga, workouts and classes to join for free right here in West -Michigan.

Yoga montage at Mulick Park

Monday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. (1632 Sylvan Ave. SE)

Every Monday until August 29th, you can join a group of people for a relaxed walk in the park. This is the course I also took and everyone is so friendly and non-judgmental that you might even make a friend in the process.

This class, like the other yoga classes offered by the Grand Rapids Parks Department, is ideal for beginners, and Mulick Park is centrally located just minutes from Alger Heights with plenty of easy parking.

Want to attend a community event but can’t get out, or maybe you just want to stay in those pajamas? This art course is ideal for artists and aspiring artists of all ages.

It’s all on Zoom so you can join from anywhere for free. You’ll need some painting supplies to participate, but other than that, this is a great way to save on gas and have some fun with others.

Thursdays on the Blue Bridge from 5:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m

Three Rivers Public Library, Wednesdays through September at 11am

Get the kids out, stretch those legs and learn something new. Every Wednesday, the Three Rivers Library offers a class for children to learn about science and technology

Each week has a different theme. So if you think your child would love a certain topic, you can check ahead or feel comfortable each week by trying them all. You can learn more about each week on their Eventbrite page.

Left To Write Class for creative writing

Several days a month, Hackley Public Library in Holland

If you like creative writing, you’ll love Left to Write, HPL’s very own creative writing group! Here you can participate in writing exercises, tell your own stories and meet other creative writers. This group offers a low key atmosphere for writers of all experience levels, everyone is welcome! Remember to bring pen and paper.

You have two opportunities to enjoy Left to Write each month (on the 2nd Wednesday of the month from 3:30 to 4:30 and on the 4th Tuesday of the month from 5:30 to 6:30). Feel free to come to one or both whenever you can! learn more on their website.

Sunrise Yoga at the Indian Trails Golf Course

Wednesday mornings (2776 Kalamazoo Ave. SE) from 6:30 a.m. to 7:15 a.m

Sometimes all you need is a gentle flow to start your day, and the end-of-day classes don’t fit your schedule.

You can join this free weekly class (then take a tee time) and enjoy the sunrise while starting your day with some relaxing yoga at the Links.
