Growing Pains star Kirk Cameron directed a documentary called Homeschool Awakening in which he criticized American schooling, calling it inaccurate and immoral. Cameron has strong opinions about how children are raised in schools and he believes that children should be raised better at home. In the teaser, a mother explains: “The freedom we had was so worth the small sacrifice it was to teach the kids. Now, 12 years later, I realize it wasn’t a sacrifice — it was a total gift.” “No one’s going to love our kids more than we do,” added a father, while a homeschooled teen remarked, “And that greatest gift I received was my own identity. My parents gave it to me.”
According to Cameron, one of the film’s first goals is to dispel the myth that homeschooling is terrible and that those who do it are rare and underdeveloped compared to those who attend a traditional school. The documentary’s synopsis reads, “Families across the country are experiencing the homeschool awakening and embracing the freedom and opportunity for self-discovery—with the world as a classroom. Join award-winning actor Kirk Cameron as he delves into the adventures of dynamic American families to bring fun and confidence back to learning. The Homeschool Awakening examines the specifics and honest answers to the most commonly asked questions about homeschooling.”

Homeschooling is growing in popularity in the US due to safety concerns following the Parkland and Santa Fe shootings
Social media was quick to respond, with one person writing on Twitter: “Homeschooling has turned my kids into amazing young adults. you surprise me School teachers just send work home anyway and we always ended up doing it. We use an online system and our children not only learned about education but also time management and personal responsibility.” “Yes, homeschool them then. That will keep them quarantined at home and that’s all we asked for,” added another person. Another person remarked, “The best way to save our children.”
However, not everyone was happy with Kirk’s idea, as one person pointed out: “All Kirk Cameron does is make money off the fears of the common man and the common woman. We tried homeschooling in the 20/21 school year and all that came out was that our eldest daughter was further behind her peers. You’re not doing your kids any favors by hosting them.” Another said, “Kids need that social interaction just like all of you here.”
Meanwhile, according to ABC News, 18 states released statistics for the current school year in early April; The number of children attending homeschooling increased 63 percent from 2020-2021 and then fell just 17 percent from 2021-2022. This indicates that parents have chosen not to send their children to school for reasons of safety and better education.

Cameron has stated that the public school system does not work with people, it works against them and that he sees the public school system as America’s greatest enemy. The actor advises taking control of education, because whoever controls the textbooks influences the future. The documentary will only be shown in cinemas on June 13th and 14th.
