Evangelization for Children and Families - Madison Catholic Herald

Every year around this time, several parishes and a diocesan office in the diocese are busy preparing for the summer.

We in the Diocese of Madison are blessed to host an annual Totus Tuus program.

Each summer we hire faithful young adults to witness to the truth about Christ and to share their journeys of faith with youth in our parishes.

During Totus Tuus, these young adults share the gospel, teach catechism, spend time with the children in prayer and the sacraments, and have loads of fun!

Totus Tuus is a Latin phrase meaning “all yours” and was the motto of St. John Paul II. He took his motto from the True Devotion to Mary of St. Louis de Montfort.

Totus Tuus means our longing to give ourselves completely to Jesus through Mary.

In our diocesan efforts, our mission is to awaken in young people a yearning for holiness, a deep desire for conversion of heart and openness to their vocation, constantly challenging them to grow in relationship with Jesus and Mary.

What we do in a Totus Tuus week

Totus Tuus began in Wichita, Kan. in 1987 and today exists in 49 dioceses across the country.

Each year, Totus Tuus prays for seminarians and college students from our diocese and across the country, calling them to carry this mission to every young person, volunteer, and family they meet during their time as Totus Tuus missionaries.

These young adults are hired because of their enthusiasm, love for Christ and the Church, and personal commitment to the spiritual life and sacraments.

They, in turn, offer this life of faith as a personal testimony of what it means to give one’s whole life to Christ.

A typical week includes daily Mass, Confession, meditation on the Rosary, games, skits and catechesis related to the age.

Each team that is sent to the communities consists of two women and two men.

They will be invited to a different church each week to conduct a mission-like experience for elementary, middle, and high school students.

When visiting a church, the team spends time with families and shares their mission with the whole church on the weekends.

involve families

This year, Totus Tuus’ schedule and plan includes an evening where families can gather, have dinner, and spend time growing in faith and prayer.

We are blessed to have Bishop Donald J. Hying of Madison as a guest in most parishes on their Totus Tuus family formation evening.

Meet the Totus Tuus team members in Summer 2022

It’s been a busy year. Bishop Hying, together with the Office of Evangelization and Catechesis and the Office of Vocations, have scheduled two separate Totus Tuus teams that will each visit five parishes this summer and support Love Begins Here for a week.

Each team consists of two seminarians and two young women.

Ally Kysel

Hello friends! I’ve just finished my freshman year at UW-Madison and I’m majoring in Spanish Education. I can’t wait to spend my life helping and teaching children. I also really enjoy spending time outdoors with God’s creation, especially at the lakes. You can usually find me at the chapel, on the tennis court, or riding my bike downtown.

Sarah Breuer

I’m so excited to be returning to Totus Tuus for my third summer and seeing all the people I’ve met over the past few years! I grew up in Glen Haven, Wisconsin, majored in Soil and Plant Sciences at UW-Platteville, and not only served with Totus Tuus, but also served a year with NET Ministries and another year with the Diocese of Madison Xavier Mission Team! In my free time, you can find me on my family’s farm, at a coffee shop, or visiting small town and enjoying local dishes with my friends.

I will be a junior studying biomedical engineering at UW-Madison. I enjoy being involved with St. Paul’s Catholic Student Center and have grown in my faith through the community there.
