Story of surf photographer Doc Ball

Join the Hermosa Beach Historical Society for the June edition of the Happy Hour with History. Film producer and director Carl Ackerman presents The Life Story of Doc Ball, a 54-minute documentary about the first dedicated surf photographer, John Ball, in the 1930s and 40s. FRIDAY 1st July

Roadium drive-in movie

Enjoy an open-air show at The Roadium Drive-In Theater, 2500 West Redondo Beach Blvd. in torrance. Today’s movie is Angels in the Outfield. Admission is $25 per vehicle and the film begins at approximately 8:15 p.m. Gates open at 7pm to allow time to settle in and visit the concession stand. Bring chairs for optional out-of-vehicle seating. Tickets can be purchased on, at the box office on the night of the show, or at the Roadium office during business hours.

Cars & Stripes Forever

The Cars & Stripes Forever event returns to the San Pedro waterfront on Friday, July 1 from 5pm to 10pm. More than 100 pre-1975 cars and motorcycles are on display, surrounded by live bands, food trucks and an adjacent beer garden. The evening ends with fireworks at 9:15 p.m. on Harbor Blvd. and Swinford St. near the fanfare fountains. Take advantage of a free shuttle from downtown San Pedro or cheap parking on Harbor Blvd. and 1st St. See the Community Events section of for details.

Monthly Zimmerman meeting

The Zimmerman Automobile Driving Museum opens its doors from 9am to 12pm for its monthly Cruise In meeting for owners of vintage cars and motorcycles. Coffee, pastries and hot dogs are available for purchase. The museum is located at 610 Lairport Dr. in El Segundo;

Village Runner 5K Race

Celebrate Independence Day with a scenic run along the Pacific Ocean at the 29th Annual 5K and Firecracker Dash on Sunday, July 3rd. The main events for adults (and youth over 10) start at 8am. Races for kids ages 4-9 start at 9:30 am Competitors can win age group awards, cash prizes (for the top three male and female runners) and medals for kids dash finishers. Entrance fees are $45 per person. Race packages can be picked up on Saturday, July 2 from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Village Runner, 255 Avenida Del Norte, or on race day from 6:30 a.m. near Catalina Ave. and Palos Verdes Blvd. be collected. Fun and fireworks at the seaside lagoon

The City of Redondo Beach invites the community to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday at Seaside Lagoon, 200 Portofino Way. The Lagoon is open from 12:00 PM to 7:30 PM for water activities. For the rest of the evening, visitors are only allowed on sandy areas; Fireworks start at 9pm (toilets will be closed for cleaning from 7:30pm to 8:30pm) Admission is subject to availability until capacity is reached; $6 youth, $8 adult; $20 for parking.

Hermosa Beach Ironman

The Hermosa Beach Ironman event, a South Bay tradition, takes place at 8am on the beach at 30th Street. Participants test their diverse skills by running a mile, paddling a mile, and chugging a six-pack of beers. Ironman events raise money for charities that help families in need. Registration for this event will be held on Saturday, July 2 and Sunday, July 3, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the corner of 6th St. and Cypress Ave. The group’s Facebook page, Hermosa Beach Ironman, has the latest.

Begg Pool Celebration

Join the City of Manhattan Beach Aquatics staff for a special day at Begg Pool, 1402 N. Peck Ave. from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Water games, balloon tossing, swimming and music ensure fun for all. Entertainment at Riviera Village

Independence Day activities are from 2:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in Redondo Beach around the Riviera Village on Avenue I between Catalina Ave. and Esplanade. Food, beer and wine plus live music with Pedro Reis at 2pm, Soul Shot at 4pm and Feed the Kitty at 7pm. Torrance City Fireworks

Bring blankets and chairs for the City of Torrance-sponsored fireworks display, which begins at 9:15 p.m. Choose from two vantage points on a first-come, first-served basis: The LA County Court House West Parking Lot, 825 Maple Ave, or The LA Galaxy Sports Complex, 555 Maple Ave. The Galaxy facility opens to spectators at 7:30pm and closes 30 minutes after the show. Book sale of the public library

The Friends of the Redondo Beach Library book sale is held three days a week at the library at 303 N. Pacific Coast Highway. The sales times are Tuesdays from 11:15 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Thursdays from 11:15 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Fridays from 2:15 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Also, the Hermosa Beach Friends of the Library store is open Mondays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and 1 p.m., Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and some Saturdays. Kids fitness in Manhattan Village

The Manhattan Village Kids Club is partnering with ACE Yoga and Wild Child Gym to offer free activity classes on Tuesdays from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., weekly through July 26.
